Formerly known as The Dock at the Bay, Dos Amigos on the Lake opened its doors in 2017, offering Buffalonians fresh seafood, modern Californian cuisine, and a view of Lake Erie that’s to die for. But behind the sleek, modern decor and impressive margarita flights is a history of war and loss in one of Buffalo’s oldest buildings.
The History: Dos Amigos on the Lake has gone through many name changes over the years: The Dock, Dock at the Bay, Bay View House, and the WillLink Hotel during the War of 1812. It’s considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Buffalo, with some parts of the building dating back to 1804 which is extraordinarily old for the city of Buffalo. Being directly on the shores of Lake Erie, it was a pivotal location during the War of 1812 (you know, the Revolutionary War 2.0 where the British tried to take back America again). Throughout its history, it’s been an inn, a pub, and most recently, a restaurant and banquet hall.
The Haunting: According to The Phantom Tour, Dos Amigos on the Lake is one of the most haunted buildings in Western New York, and that is due to its role in the War of 1812. Many soldiers spent their final happy moments here, and because of that, it can lead to a haunting. The most famous story is of a soldier from the War of 1812 named Captain James Byrd who would sneak off his ship every night and meet a young lady in the WillLink Hotel. Eventually, he was caught, court-martialed, and shot before being buried in Hamburg. There are claims of phantom footsteps, objects moving on their own, and even a full-bodied apparition of a man in a black cloak and a wide-brimmed black hat. Many people assume this man is James Byrd and he’s still referred to as The Captain.
Spooky Rating:
2/10
It looks as if Dos Amigos on the Lake is trying to not advertise the fact that their building is supposedly haunted. They’ve completely remodeled the interior to have a very minimalistic modern look and there’s no mention anywhere about the building’s history.

The food at Dos Amigos on the Lake is a bit on the pricey side, but the portions are incredibly generous. They offer classic Buffalo wings, seafood, sandwiches, beef, chicken, lobster mac ‘n cheese, and they even have a raw bar. I recommend ordering the pork belly poutine and the Dirty South sandwich, and if you’re looking for some spirits other than the ghosts, definitely order the margarita flight and the Grande Bloody Mary. There is seating available both inside and outside along the water for you to be able to watch the sunset over Lake Erie.
