Ghost hunting as a hobby can become pretty expensive fairly quickly. With the equipment we see professional teams use on TV, you might expect to drop several hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to have a successful ghost hunt. But that’s not necessarily the case! Here are some of my favorite tools to use out in the field and some of them might surprise you!

Cambridge Labs EMF Meter

,

This is one of my favorite EMF detectors and I’ve been using it for over a year now. It’s narrow, sleek design fits right into your pocket and it is recharged by USB, not batteries!

.

.

Motion Activated Cat Toy

This might be a bit of a shock… a cat toy? But you’d be surprised how useful this can be, especially if you’re a fan of investigating in the dark. These balls are motion activated and light up when they move. I’ve gotten great results with these simple balls, especially when child spirits are said to be present.

.

SB-7 (Spirit Box)

Thanks to shows like Kindred Spirits and Hellier, the SB7 has gotten very popular in recent years. It’s one of my favorite pieces of equipment as I absolutely love to experiment with the Estes Method. This little gadget sweeps radio waves, allowing spirit voices to supposedly come through.

.

The Everything Ghost Hunting Book

.

This is a great book for beginners before heading out on their first investigation. My advice: read the book and see what equipment you like the most!

.

.

Teddy Bear Voice Recorders

.

You might be scratching your head, thinking, ‘Really? Teddy bear voice recorders?’ Yes! These simple recorders have technology similar to the coveted Panasonic DR-60 (which runs for several thousand dollars) and pick up some amazing EVPs.

.

.

Dowsing Rods

.

Some people love dowsing rods… some people don’t. Now you can decide for yourself with this old-fashioned ghost hunting technique.

.

LED Laser Grid

.

This LED laser grid is perfect for spotting unexplained movement whether it’s shadows, orbs, etc. Set this up with a camera rolling and you might be surprised what you end up capturing!

.

.

I’d Rather Be Ghost Hunting Cap

.

Let others around you know how you really feel with this hat. Also comes in a beanie!

.

.

Equipment Carrying Case

.

Want to up your ghost hunting game? Instead of throwing all your equipment into a backpack, keep things safe and organized with this case.

.

.

Night Vision Camcorder

.

It’s night vision on a budget! This camera doesn’t have all the bells and whistles you’d find on other infrared cameras, but if you’re looking for something cheap and effective, check out this little camcorder!

.

BONUS:

The Haunted Atlas of Western New York

.

Looking for an all-inclusive guide to haunted locations in Western New York? Check out my first book, A Haunted Atlas of Western New complete with over 130 haunted locations for you to check out!

Happy Ghost Hunting Day! Where are you planning on investigating? Let us know in the comments! I’ll be at the historic Ghostlight Theatre! Stay safe and stay weird!
