Many grew up there… but did you know that Allegany has always been thought to be haunted?
The “wilderness playground of Western New York” was dedicated in 1921, although it had been home to the Iroquois with their tales of the Great Snake of the Allegany and even giants buried in the earth for centuries.
Since the state park was established almost 100 years ago, the legends and lore have been forgotten by guests hiking, fishing, and camping in the Red House and Quaker Run areas. But in recent years, more and more people have come forward with their own spooky tales revolving around the hiking trails and cabins that you can rent yourself.
Near Cabin No. 2 at Stony Cabin Trail in the Quaker Run section of the park, multiple people have reported seeing a little girl playing all by herself. When they approach her to ask where her parents are, she vanishes.
The ever-popular Thunder Rocks are home to a woman in a 1800s white dress and bonnet, seen most often by hunters and hikers.
One of the most famous apparitions is the “flannel man.” Since the 1980s, he’s been spotted multiple times and is always described in the same way: a tall, thin man with a beard, jeans, and (of course) a flannel shirt. Most often, he is seen in the field across from the Quaker rental office. He’s also been spotted on the road leading to Quaker Lake, as well as ASP3 near Science Lake, and Quaker Run Creek near Group Camp No. 5. No one knows who the flannel man is, but it doesn’t seem like he’s going anywhere.
But perhaps the strangest place in the park is the Witch’s Walk, also known as Ga’hai to the Seneca. For those brave enough to venture to the Witch’s Walk, it is located along the Alleghany River between Bay State and Route 280 as you head into the Quaker Run section of the state park. The reports range from the mundane to the bizarre: people feeling uneasy to spotting creatures that look half human, half animal. Mysterious orbs of light can be seen on the mountaintop, and many have reported hearing the sound of drums that grow louder the higher up the mountain you venture. According to legend, it was once home to witches and is even the supposed sight of Confederate treasure.
To experience the supernatural of Allegany State Park, you can visit for a meal, a hike, and even a camping trip! Open all year round, the state park offers both natural beauty and a chance to experience the ancient and supernatural as well.

I can’t believe you showed this. michael and I were camping at Allegany! One very late in Fall we camped there in our little Airstream. There was a heavy beautiful snowfall where everything was coated in a snow just beautifully and ice and snow on all trees and glistening. We decided to take a drive through the park to see it all. We were driving in the middle of no where deep, deep in the woods where there was nothing around for miles and miles. All of a sudden we saw a figure walking. There was a figure we figured as a woman, in a huge long cape covering her hooded head ,,she had one giant big black dog with her. She was walking slowly on the road. We passed no cars either way and there was no way she could have walked so far from anywhere around. It really shook both of us as it was simply so strange and unbelievable! It still gives me shivers when I think about her.

I was at science lake when it got very quiet,,was fishing with my sister n law,,it was errie,,we left with chills,,drove about 60 feet and a very large man about 8-9 feet tall with hair head to toe walked right in front of car,,never looked at us kept walking to other side of road,,,

Last year me and my family of 9 traveled to Allegany as a family vacay. Unknowingly we went to a place called Stone Tower. There I saw a figure, no one else had seen it and also no one believed me. Today I was researching for another return, then found that place, it was known for being haunted… WE HAD NO IDEA!

About two years ago, I was camping on the Quaker side with family. It had been raining on and off the entire day. My brother, my mom and I were sitting outside by the campfire one night with our dog, Peanut. We heard the most eerie cry or howl that you could imagine. We all froze and just looked at each other. We didn’t know if it was human, animal or something else. Even our dog looked at us like ‘what was that?,’ but he didn’t panic. Later on that night, we headed inside the cabin. We heard the same creepy noise. It didn’t seem that close, but good thing we had all the windows covered with curtains. No one had ventured outside to check it out, as it has started raining heavier. I’ve read online about various encounters in the area over the years of a bigfoot or yeti-like creature. Who knows what’s out there …
